Traditional Medieval Alencon

Photographer: Lesley Treloar (

Alencon has a rich and varied history from medieval days until the infamous day when in 1944 12th August it was the first French town to be liberated from the Germans, by its own French Army and General Le Clerc, who has now a huge super market chain named after him and a very elegant statue memorial.

Notice the huge rough granite balls at the elegant arched gate entrance, these can be seen all over the towns grander properties, their purpose as stone buffers to provide protection from passing vehicles.
