Ancient Burgundy #1- Charlieu Abbey

Charlieu AbbeyThe monastery, dedicated to Saint Fortunatas was founded in 872. Some beautifully late Romanesque carved stonework with such intricate detail I found on one of the  two portals of the North façade of this Benedictine abbey. The stunning sculpted decoration of the great portal dates from the 12C. Unfortunately we could not visit the abbey as it was closed for the season.
