This was not a posed shot, I was lucky to see a young couple doing a few selfies of themselves with the waterfalls as the backdrop, she paused for a moment watching her man and I clicked. It took us a few hours through built up areas and eventually the wonderful Keralan rainforest to get to this beauty spot 1000 feet above sea level in the Thrissur District. Here at the base of the water falls we had to endure a slippy climb down many steps, very wet and very humid because we are still in the rainy season. The thunderstorms and rain are quite spectacular, so the waterfalls were in full flood.
Environmentalists claim that Athirapally is a one-of its-kind riparian ecosystem in Kerala, I must admit it exceeded all my expectations and not surprisingly it has been used as a location in many Bollywood movies. We had been told you can swim here, but, now this is has been banned recently. I caught up with a local photographer who said years ago he used to wade out into the middle of the Chalakudy river to photograph when the falls were quieter. My first serious photograph session and I had to dig out my OPTECH rain sleeve 😉
This is my first blog since arriving in Kerala, delayed due to adjusting to the rather exteme humidity which we hope soon will abate in the next few weeks and the good ol WI-FI is rather slow.
THIS IS NOT MY IMAGE (unfortunately!) but just wanted to show the location:
